Mediumship development, just like our human experience, has long been intertwined with belief systems. Let’s consider what a belief system is, and how we might keep ourselves bound by our beliefs, specifically as they pertain to our mediumship development. A belief system can be considered a set of principles that form the basis of a philosophy or even a moral code. This may especially apply to religion and from my experience, to mediumship development.
We are responsible for creating our own belief systems and blindly following the beliefs of others. This happens… We are having a human experience here on Earth after all! Here’s my question to you: how are you getting in your own way? You may be a little taken aback by the directness of the question but seriously, consider how you may be getting in your own way. Are you blocking your mediumship development simply by being bound by certain beliefs? By beliefs related to your innate abilities?
Perhaps you often think you’d make a great medium when you have all your shit together. The truth is, mediumship development is a lifelong journey where you allow your abilities to unfold by doing the work (trust me, a lot of work!). A true medium always works on their own ‘stuff’ and there is always ‘stuff’ to work through because we’re having a human experience. The more we work on healing our ‘stuff,’ the stronger our abilities get. As we work through our ‘stuff,’ it stops holding us back and our link to Spirit grows. In time, that link becomes stronger and stronger… providing we continue to do the work.
When I first began my training and development, I was like a sponge, trying to absorb everything I could through my earthly teachers. Interestingly, some of my teachers’ beliefs were passed onto me until one day, I actively questioned these beliefs. I asked myself, “Have I actually experienced this (belief) to be true?” If my answer was ‘no’, I continued digging and asked myself, “So why am I applying it to my mediumship as truth? “The more I ‘learned,’ the more I had to unlearn. I realised that I had to let go of some of my beliefs around mediumship in order to make any leaps in my development. In other words, I had to work through my blocks in order to make those breakthroughs that have made me the medium I am today.
I grew up in a very religious household with my father who was a Pentecostal Minister. During these early years, one of the biggest barriers to my mediumship development was the belief that there was evil in the Spirit world. Just the very thought of evil spirits put the wind up my sails. I grew up in a house where religious belief systems ruled our world. I could not turn in any direction without going through God first. He controlled every aspect of our lives, or so I thought. It was up to me to break through these beliefs that had been handed down to me by my family. This wasn’t easy to do but it was necessary for my own development as a medium and as a human being.
I’ll never forget the first reading I had. That experience blew me wide open and made me realise that I had built up a belief system of fear around me. I had allowed myself to believe that the Spirit world was fearful and evil because that’s what my father believed. Yet, my direct experience with the Spirit world proved otherwise. Who should I believe? My father, due to his experiences and beliefs, or myself, through my own experiences?
Generally speaking, we are not taught to trust ourselves. We’re taught to look outside of ourselves for validation from our parents, our friends, Governments and so on. No one teaches us to look within and trust ourselves. And yet, learning to trust yourself and your link with Spirit is ESSENTIAL for maximising your mediumship potential. Yes, sometimes it takes years to build this trust but once you get it, you get it!
Consider all the beliefs you’ve built up that block you from working towards your potential. Both in terms of your life potential and your mediumship development.
Set an intention to connect with Spirit and ask them to show you what belief systems you can let go of in order to connect with them more fully. You might be surprised by what they show you!
Trust what comes in and remember that you’re on this path for a reason. Let go of those outdated beliefs and allow Spirit to work their magic.
