“The spiritual life does not remove us from the world but leads us deeper into it” – Henry J.M Nouwen
There is an old saying that you do not choose the spirits, they choose you. That is how it is with our relationship with our guides and also with our spiritual talents. Exactly how we express our talents and use them, depends a great deal on our choice. Our choice is limited by our knowledge and exposure and our preferences are impacted by our belief systems and predisposition to certain practices. We can inherit our practices, similarly to how we might inherit our talents, but for many of us, we fall into our practice by accident – if there is such a thing, or through experimentation. I am going to encourage all of you to keep experimenting and trying out new modalities. Be curious.

Often, we are drawn to things we are comfortable with. I was brought up playing cards, so tarot and oracle cards were an easy connection for me. They felt comfortable, familiar and easy to work with. It did take some practice for me to hone my skills. My first tarot and oracle card decks were not the right decks for me to work with, but they served a purpose and they got me started. I also had imaginary friends, spirits from an early age and I was able to see, hear, feel and play with them freely. When I began to experience interactions that were disconcerting, I had to get professional guidance to manage the interactions. I was being lazy and it was time for me to grow and hone my skill sets. My guides, who had protected me as a child, allowed me to experience something unpleasant, to teach me. This is what I mean about the spirits choosing you. It is not a one way street. Most of you will not have to learn this lesson. For every skill set and growth spurt, there is an expectation around using the skill.
Getting back to our choices of spiritual modalities or practices, in many ways, is a statement of identity and who we are.
Here are some guidelines for choosing a practice or experimenting with a new practice:
- It comes into your life as an opportunity gift.
- You are drawn to the modality as it is a natural part of your talents
- An impulse buy in an unusual situation – on holiday, in a funny store you never enter.
- It pops into your head, and then you keep seeing it.
- You reluctantly agree to go with a friend.
When you begin with something new, call in your guides, even if you do not know them, or have a relationship with them, they have a relationship with you and will keep you safe.
A quick note on unsafe practice. If someone you know is playing with a modality in a way that makes you uncomfortable, do not participate. Modalities are a tool. It is the intent behind the usage and the lack of adherence to safe spiritual practise that creates the opening for harm to occur. Spiritual Practice is not meant for personal power, but empowerment. These are two very different mindsets. One is based on fear or lack and the later, is based on unconditional love.
So… what are you naturally drawn to: painting, writing, cards, reading, crystals, meditation, healing? You must follow your instincts and continue to explore as being part of the spiritual world is an opportunity for continuous growth should you choose it.
If you find a teacher who opens doors into new levels of skill or new activities and you are enjoying the learning, go with it. In all of our choices, we can continue to learn one modality and master it, or we might be open to exploring more than one. If you have a great relationship with your guides, they might be the ones to teach you and prompt you to learn. Be open to the messages they send you, be open to your own curiosity and be forever willing to learn. Learning a modality requires practice and a willingness to experiment, internalize the learning and then to seek some more knowledge.
A continuous path of exploration awaits if you keep the willingness to learn at the forefront of your practice.
