‘Everything happens for a reason’ (EHFAR). What an interesting statement. It is a statement that I hear and use often. I only really became aware of it and paid attention to it when I started my own spiritual journey.
Along the way I have searched for that ‘reason’ countless times, as I am sure you may have too.
I have often understood and accepted said statement, due to finding awareness in the lesson of whatever challenge I was facing. And numerous times I have questioned it, as it felt hollow and dismissive, void of a reasonable lesson for me to comprehend.
It is a phrase meant to comfort or make sense of a difficult situation or random events in life, but it does not always feel that way.
How does one find the reason for illnesses such as cancer? A child dying? A person suffering from a serious physical disability?
In such traumatic times, it really does become a journey of self-discovery, not only for the person going through it but often also for the close support network around them.
I have found when individuals face difficult times and struggle to find any sense or reasonable logic as to why certain things happen; it is when they open themselves up to experiencing something different to find answers.
It is at this point that many of my clients have contacted me to see what Forensic Healing and Reiki can offer them.
In these healing sessions, the person discovers more awareness about themselves and their situation. This allows them to experience and be more tangible about possible reasons, lessons, underlying causes, and purpose in their situation.
It gives them a new meaning to the phrase ‘everything happens for a reason’, hope being the most important.
Forensic Healing is all about gathering precise information and clues to your specific needs and situation. As Forensic Healing Practitioners, we are like spiritual and factual detectives. We put all the puzzle pieces together for you to process and gain clarity and understanding of the reasons ‘why’ behind the statement EHFAR.
That is the thing with this expression: it can bring you comfort and hope and strengthen your belief in a higher purpose to the events in your life. It can catapult you into searching for the reasons, where you may embark on different paths, such as a spiritual journey, a healing journey and a self-discovering expansion of your soul. Therefore, creating a new point of view where you make positive changes in your life.
The flip side is that it can be used as an answer to dismiss situations, not take responsibility for your actions, and make any positive changes in your life. Or send you spiralling into self-blame, believing that you are the reason for your own misfortunes.
Whichever way you sway, healing and clearing your energy will be required for you to move forward and gain empowerment in your situation.
Here are some pros and cons associated with this phrase.
Pros
- It gives you a glimpse of hope during uncertainty and feeling dead on the inside.
- It helps you accept circumstances.
- It can keep you sane when you feel distraught/helpless.
- It can motivate you to search for lessons, opportunities, and good things in situations.
- You grow, and new doors of opportunity open. (We can verify this by looking at the many success stories of people who have risen after total collapse.)
- In hindsight, you realise that certain situations provided the exact push you needed at that time.
- Searching for lessons and finding reasons motivates you to make positive changes in your life.
Cons
- It may be interpreted as having a lack of empathy.
- A person may feel that their feelings, pain, suffering and struggles are being dismissed.
- It may invalidate a person’s grief in situations of loss or trauma.
- Feelings of guilt or self-blame may be created due to a person feeling they are the reason for their own hardships.
- A person may blindly accept the statement as the answer and not take responsibility for their actions or for making changes in their life.
Those of us on a spiritual journey believe that everything happens for a reason and that the universe provides lessons for our growth and evolution. Although some situations can seem incomprehensibly random, time and hindsight usually uncover the reasons.
But believing that everything comes from a higher power or that it is a predestined plan is not to be used as a gateway to not taking responsibility for your actions and behaviour and not making constructive changes in your life.
This all becomes relevant when people have a healing session with me, as does EHFAR.
Firstly, because it is not only a sacred space for healing and making sense of it all but also a place where accountability, responsibility, and beneficial changes are encouraged.
And secondly, it gives hope to many who do not see a way out. If you do not have hope that there is a reason why things turned out the way they did, you may question life and the point of living. For what is the point of suffering if there is no purpose behind it?
The fact is that many people who experience illnesses, trials, and tribulations do not have the blessings, experiences, and opportunities that come after that. For example, a person who sustains a physical injury or disability may develop new skills and purpose to inspire and help people around the world through talks, songs, or foundations.
In conclusion, regardless of how we interpret the phrase ‘EHFAR’, it is of the utmost importance to consider and be mindful of each situation and how the person is feeling when using it.
Whilst it can provide comfort and hope to many, I believe it is imperative to offer support, empathy, and understanding to those going through loss, trauma, hardships and difficult times.
May you always have hope.
