I want to share my journey of overcoming challenges and frustrations when trying to find my career path.
I left school early as this was what my parents wanted. I did not argue with their decision. They thought they were doing the right thing for me, but I really struggled with jobs, I was always leaving them, not understanding why.
I had great bosses, I was always being offered other roles and was well respected, but still, there was something lacking.
I was challenged trying to understand my capabilities and find a career path that suited me. I had low self-esteem and a lack of confidence, but thankfully a great sense of humour which kept me going.
I went from job to job not understanding the reasons I did not stay in one for a long time.
The day came when enough was enough. I decided to do some work on myself as I was so frustrated by this. I took time off from work to understand myself. Boy, what an insight that was.
This was the turning point for me. I worked out my career path and I also learned ‘I was a free spirit’ as I enjoyed the freedom of working for myself not for someone else.
I will say, this process was not easy. There were many tears, anger, frustrations, disappointments and shock with what I learned about myself, good and bad.
Some key points of my journey I would like to share with you:
- You need to be authentic and until you can understand YOU, you may be like me, job-hopping.
- Do not have a career that other people think you should do or have.
- Take time out and work on yourself – if you cannot do it on your own, find a Coach you are comfortable with.
- Start journalling – if you can do it when you first wake up in the morning you will be amazed with what you write. The reasoning is: that your subconscious is clear it has no thoughts, and it is fresh.
- Go back to what you loved doing as a child, it may be there that you realise what you would like for a career.
When I wrote down what I loved doing as a child, like many girls, I enjoyed playing with my dolls. I would have them on stage acting, dancing and making out that was me, well guess what? The light bulb came on here for me, I love talking to people, helping and guiding them, and guess what, I now coach and train. It may sound pretty simple, but I never gave it any thought until I worked on myself!
- Surround yourself with good supportive people while working things out.
- Face your fears, do not turn away from them, as these are part of your learning.
- Look at what you love doing.
- Write down what you are good at.
To finish off – Try not to focus on what you do not like, this will hold you back from moving forward. Good luck with your findings!
