Is it Time to Throw Away The Solution Cliches and Embrace a New Approach to New Year’s Goals?

Reading Time: 4 mins read

Ah, January—the month of fresh starts, new beginnings, and an endless parade of New Year’s resolutions. We’ve all been there: writing our list of ambitious goals that often disappear just as fast as January tends to. But what if this year could be different, what if we throw away the tired clichés of resolutions and embrace a different approach that may just keep you in tune with what you want to create this year.

Yes?

Well… let’s start by reshaping our ideas around resolutions. Instead of seeing them as ironclad commitments etched in stone, think of them as flexible, evolving intentions. Swap the rigid “I must” with the more compassionate “I’d like to.” By shifting the language, we allow room for growth, learning, and
the occasional detour without the guilt trip and being so hard on ourselves.

Our life, after all, is not just governed by our heart desires and what we set the intent to create in our little map of the world. Our soul often has a bigger
picture in mind, then add on, the universe deciding to put its own spin on your resolutions, perhaps changing where you thought you were going, completely.

It happens, believe me…

Celebrate the small wins, they count!

Big dreams are exciting and can certainly give us something to work towards, but it’s the small wins that fuel us and keep us inspired. Without them, it can be so easy to lose traction and motivation. So, the trick is to break down your dreams, goals and desires into bite-sized, manageable steps. This is great for those who tend to get overwhelmed with ‘all the to-do’s’.

Want to write a novel this year? Start with a paragraph a day. Dreaming of running a marathon? Begin by jogging around the block. Celebrate these mini-milestones— they’re the building blocks of living the life you dream about.

Colour outside the line!

Your goals should reflect your quirks as well as your passions, without being worried about what someone else expects from you. Always wanted to master the art of meditation but your friends think it’s uncool? Just do it anyway! Interested in learning the ukulele but you’re too shy to play? Strum away!

The key is to embrace what makes you genuinely happy and curious without the fear of what might happen if you colour outside the line. Perhaps it’s a masterpiece waiting to happen!

Spiritual running buddy!

Accountability partners are the heroes of resolution success stories. Find a buddy who shares your goals or aspirations. Whether it’s hitting the gym, starting a side hustle, or just trying to be more organized, having someone to share the journey makes it more enjoyable and motivating.

Not to mention, having someone like-minded in your life adds so much more value than you can count!

Mind over matter!

Resolutions are as much about mindset as they are about action. Cultivate a growth-oriented mentality and adopt the word ‘yet’- like in, ‘I can’t do that – yet’, and then go learn how to do just that.

Embrace failures as lessons and stepping-stones toward success. Remember, it’s not about perfection but progress. As long as you are taking teeny mini steps each day, you’re making progress. And sure, if you feel ready to take big steps, that’s great too! Be kind to yourself on this journey, and don’t forget to
sprinkle in some self-compassion along the way.

What deadline?

Okay, don’t throw about the deadline completely, but be prepared to allow a little flexibility and break free from the calendar constraints! Life doesn’t always have to work on a schedule, so why should your dreams, desires and goals? Allow yourself the freedom to start, stumble, pause, and restart whenever you please. The journey matters more than the destination. The worst thing we can do is beat ourselves up about it.

Celebrate YOU!

Lastly, celebrate yourself. Reflect on your achievements, ALL THE TIME—big and small. Track and acknowledge the hurdles you’ve overcome and the growth you’ve experienced. Regardless of what point that is at. Treat yourself kindly and give yourself credit for the effort you’re putting in and what you already have to feel grateful for. After all, you’re amazing just the way you are, and you’ve made it this far, right? I’m sure you have a list of accomplishments to brag about already, so don’t forget to give some love to them too.

Remember, the beauty lies in how we weave the journey, not just the destination we aspire to. The intent we meet a new year with is no different – it will be the journey that matters the most. So, cheers to a year of self-discovery, small victories, and embracing our beautifully imperfect selves.
