“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you
something else is the greatest accomplishment.”
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
True self-expression can be viewed as the ability to witness the expiration of who we thought we were, over and over again throughout the journey of our lifetime. Whether we’re aware of it or not, we are all in a continuous cycle of death and rebirth. A beautiful – yet sometimes tumultuous – dance between endings and new beginnings.
But how can we master the art of true self-expression and embrace this rhythm of self-renewal?
WILLINGNESS
As we navigate the ‘magic carpet ride’ of life, we often cling to familiar identities, ideas, and beliefs. We can become attached to these self-constructed narratives, thinking they define who we are. But in reality, true self-expression requires the courage to let go of these preconceived notions and allow the continual evolution of ourselves to unfold.
It takes a lot of energy to hold on to previous versions of ourselves. We can feel like we’re pushing to try and make things happen in a certain way, instead of being open to the flow of life and these cycles of rebirth. Yet if we trust that everything is always working out for us and show up with willingness, we get to discover new layers and aspects of ourselves that were previously unseen.
VULNERABILITY
Vulnerability plays a pivotal role in this evolutionary journey. It is the ability to expose our true feelings and thoughts, even when they are in flux, that allows us to connect with others on a deep and genuine level. The fear of judgment or rejection often holds us back, but it is precisely through these moments of vulnerability that we find our most authentic selves. Not only is this incredibly empowering for us individually, but it also inspires others to open up to more of their authentic selves.
It’s usually the things that scare us the most that hold the most medicine for us. Much like when we are brave enough to face our deepest shadows when we find the courage to share in the depths of our darkest death cycle, we often find our most genuine connections with the world.
COMPASSION
Through any cycle of renewal, self-compassion is essential. We must be kind to ourselves as we grieve the death of our former selves and navigate the emergence of our new identity. Instead of harsh judgment, we can embrace self-compassion, allowing us to nurture and support the transformation we undergo. Consider the metamorphosis before a butterfly emerges out of the cocoon – it’s surely not criticizing itself for being a big pile of messy goo! So why do we do this to ourselves, expecting that only the ‘pretty, shiny, colourful’ phases of life are worth expressing and celebrating?

Some of the most incredible artworks, music and poetry come from humans right in the middle of a death/rebirth. These portals of creativity are powerful if we choose to channel that energy into something magnificent, rather than getting caught up in the intense emotion of it. The beauty of self-expression lies not only in the final masterpiece but also in the process itself. It is about embracing the uncertainty of the journey and celebrating each chapter as it unfolds.
As we let go of the old and embrace the new, we may stumble upon hidden facets of our personalities, untapped talents, and unrealized dreams. These discoveries enrich our lives and add depth to our expressions. True self-expression is not only about reflecting the self we know but also about unearthing the self we have yet to have the pleasure of meeting.
Here’s to our continual evolution!
