When was the last time you answered this question? What do you want?
But I mean, really answered it. If there were no consequences, no fears, nobody to be mad or disappointed, no judgements, nothing was bad or wrong. If you could have anything you want, what would that be? I dare you to dig deep, be bold and declare what it is that you really, truly want for your life. Let the limitless spirit inside of you guide you towards your most fulfilling and wildest dreams!
The things you want are the things you want for a very good reason. They were placed, very specifically, for a purpose in your heart. It doesn’t matter how big, small, weird, delusional, crazy, boring, freakish, spiritual or non-spiritual it is… you get to follow that desire no matter what. If you don’t, there’s a high chance you’ll spend a significant portion of your short time here on earth wondering, “What if?” (maybe you already have)
One of the Top 5 Regrets of the Dying (a book written by Bronnie Ware, a former Palliative Care Nurse) is: “I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.”
That one always hits me hard. As someone who spent the majority of her life in full people-pleasing mode, I’ve made it my mission to live as the most fully expressed, unapologetic version of myself – regardless of what that looks like to anyone else. No matter the judgements, perceptions or discomfort experienced along the way. In my opinion, it’s our duty to be all of who we came here to be!
So, once you’ve answered the question: “What do you want?” You’ll likely have a list of all the so-called reasons as to why you can’t possibly be, do or have that! The ego is full of these dream-destructive ideas. Write them all down. Every single one, without any judgement. Get them all out onto the page. You may have memories arise from where you inherited those fears as beliefs. Just observe while letting it all come out. If we fail to recognise them, they’ll pop out later on as resistance, usually in the form of some kind of self-sabotage behaviour.
Once you have your list, go through each one and ask yourself, “Is this really true?” (to quote ‘The Work’ by Byron Katie). Give yourself as many reasons as you can to provide evidence as to why this is, in fact, not true. For example:
Fear: I don’t know how.
Is this true? It seems true because I’ve never done it before. Maybe I don’t personally know of anybody who has achieved this. Does this make it impossible to start? No. The very fact I’m drawn to this means a future version of me already knows the ‘how’.
As Albert Einstein famously said, “Our problems or challenges can never be resolved at the same level of consciousness as that which created them” So, go to a new level of consciousness (i.e., through meditation) and ask for the next action step to be revealed to you. It is always given; it just might not make sense as to how it all adds up to the outcome you want. Follow the guidance anyway.
You may also like to add some examples of having done something you previously didn’t know how to do. Notice the ways in which you figured it out or were guided to each stepping-stone along the way. The more evidence you can give yourself to disprove the lie your fear mind is telling you, the better equipped you are to let yourself be directed towards what you really, truly want for your life.
Then go out and take one action step towards it!
Whether it’s signing up for an art class, committing to writing three pages a day or reaching out to someone for support. Whatever it is, I believe you have precisely what it takes to be all of who you came here to be.
