Healing Your Witch Wound: Beyond the Unconscious Fear of Prosecution

As women, we carry the echoes of our ancestors’ lives, their joys, struggles, and wounds, within us. One of the most traumatic wounds many of us bear is the “witch wound,” a deep-rooted fear and pain that stems from lifetimes of persecution, rejection, and the need for suppression of our true selves. This wound is particularly resonant for those who are awakening to our spiritual gifts and are here to serve, as it often manifests as a barrier to fully embracing and expressing who we are.

Healing this wound is not just about freeing ourselves in this lifetime; it’s about healing the collective trauma passed down through generations.

What Is a Witch Wound?

The witch wound is a term that sums up the deep-seated trauma inherited from generations of women who were persecuted for their spiritual knowledge, healing abilities, or simply for being different. This persecution wasn’t limited to a single historical period—it spanned centuries, during which women were labelled as witches and faced severe punishment, often resulting in death. The fear and pain from these experiences have been carried forward through our ancestral lines and past lives, embedding themselves in our unconscious psyche.

Many of us who are drawn to spiritual practices and lives of ‘being in service’ today may have lived lives where we were persecuted for the very gifts we now seek to embrace. We were forced to hide our true identities, our wisdom, and our connection to the divine. The witch wound is, therefore, not just an ancestral wound but a personal one that we may carry from one incarnation to the next.

This wound manifests as a fear of being seen, a fear of owning our power, and a deep-rooted belief that it’s safer to stay small and hidden rather than to step fully into our truth. It’s the echo of lifetimes where revealing our true selves could have—and often did—lead to death.

Signs of a Witch Wound

The witch wound shows up in subtle and not-so-subtle ways and can add various depths to how we resist showing up in the world. Recognising, and acknowledging these traits is the first step we can take toward healing. Here are some common signs that you may be carrying this wound:

Fear of Visibility: If you find yourself shrinking back when it’s time to share your spiritual beliefs or practices, this could be a sign of the witch wound. You might feel a sense of dread or anxiety at the thought of others knowing about your spiritual path, stemming from a fear of being judged or persecuted.

Self-Sabotage: The witch wound often leads to self-sabotage, particularly when you’re on the brink of something big. Whether it’s launching a spiritual business, sharing your gifts publicly, or even just stepping into a more empowered version of yourself, you might find yourself illogically pulling back at the last minute, convinced that (consciously or unconsciously) it’s not safe to be seen.

People-Pleasing: A common sign of the witch wound is an ingrained habit of people-pleasing. This behaviour stems from a deep-rooted fear of rejection and punishment, leading you to put others’ needs before your own in case it’s not safe to express your true desires and opinions.

Spiritual Guilt: Feeling guilty or wrong for exploring spiritual practices that differ (even though they feel aligned with you) from mainstream beliefs is another sign of the witch wound. This guilt can make you question and doubt your path, even when you feel deeply connected to it.

Fear of Authority: The witch wound can manifest as an intense fear of those in positions of authority. Whether it’s a boss, a religious figure, someone with ‘stronger’ or ‘bigger’ energy than you, or even societal norms, this fear often traces back to past experiences where authority figures wielded their power to persecute or control you.

Perfectionism: The need to be perfect, to avoid any criticism or judgment, is a common sign of the witch wound. It’s a protective mechanism, rooted in the belief that any mistake could lead to dire consequences.

How Do YOU Know If You Have a Witch Wound?

How the witch wound is ‘tracking’ in our life isn’t always obvious; while we can ‘know’ the signs and what to look for (as mentioned above), there can be unconscious resistance in recognising how the witch wound is shaping our life experiences. Here are some life scenarios where the witch wound might be at work:

You’ve always felt like an outsider: From a young age, you might have felt different from those around you—more sensitive, more intuitive, or more attuned to the unseen world. This sense of being different can lead to a deep-seated fear of not fitting in, which is a hallmark of the witch wound. You might have tried to suppress your uniqueness to blend in, but this only leads to a feeling of disconnect from your true self.

You’re afraid to share your spiritual beliefs: Imagine you’re in a group of friends, and the topic of spirituality comes up. Whether they are believers or not, your heart races, and you feel a knot in your stomach. You have so much to say, but something holds you back. You fear they won’t understand, or worse, that they’ll judge you. This fear of speaking your truth is a clear sign of the witch wound at play.

You second-guess your intuitive insights: Let’s say you receive a strong intuitive nudge to take a particular action, but almost immediately, doubt sets in. You start questioning whether it’s real or just your imagination. This self-doubt, particularly when it comes to your spiritual gifts, is a manifestation of the witch wound. It’s the part of you that still fears being wrong, or worse, being seen as crazy or delusional.

You downplay your spiritual gifts: Maybe you’ve always had a knack for reading people’s energy or have vivid dreams that offer guidance. But when someone compliments you or asks about it, you brush it off, saying, “Oh, it’s nothing.” This tendency to downplay your gifts is another sign of the witch wound. It’s a way of keeping yourself safe by not attracting too much attention.

You fear stepping into leadership roles: You might be the one with all the knowledge and experience in a spiritual circle, but the thought of leading terrifies you. You worry that stepping into a leadership role will make you a target, just like it did in past lives. This fear of leadership is a direct result of the witch wound, keeping you from fully embodying your power.

Healing Your Witch Wound in Your Current Life

Healing the witch wound is about reclaiming your power, embracing your spiritual gifts and the service you are here to give, and releasing the fear that has kept you hidden. This process is deeply transformative, and will not only help you not only in this lifetime but also in resolving karmic patterns from past lives that will also ripple into your future ones.

Here’s how you can begin to heal your witch wound:

Acknowledge and Honour the Wound: The first step is to acknowledge the presence of the witch wound. Recognise that this wound is not your fault; it’s a trauma that has been passed down through generations and possibly across your own past lives. Honour the women who came before you, those who were persecuted and those who survived. This acknowledgment can be incredibly powerful in starting the healing process.

Reconnect with Your Past Lives: If you feel called, consider exploring your past lives to understand where this wound originated. You might do this through past life regression therapy, meditation, or simply by setting the intention to receive insights through dreams or intuitive flashes. While not always necessary, understanding the origins of your witch wound can provide clarity and help you release the fear and pain associated with it.

Reclaim Your Identity: In past lives, you may have had to hide who you truly were—your spiritual beliefs, your healing abilities, or your connection to the divine. In this life, it’s time to reclaim those aspects of yourself. Start by affirming your right to exist fully as you are, without fear of persecution. This might involve sharing your beliefs more openly, practising your spiritual gifts with confidence, or simply allowing yourself to be seen in your truth.

Heal Through Community: The witch wound often creates a sense of isolation, making us feel like we’re alone in our spiritual journey. One of the most powerful ways to heal is by connecting with others who are on a similar path. Whether it’s through supportive circles, spiritual communities, or even online groups, finding a supportive community can help you feel safe and seen. Together, you can support each other in reclaiming your power.

Practice Self-Compassion: Healing the witch wound is a deeply personal journey, and it’s important to be gentle with yourself throughout the process. Practice self-compassion by acknowledging the pain you’ve carried and giving yourself the love and care you need to heal. This might involve creating rituals of self-love, journaling your feelings, or simply allowing yourself to rest when you need it.

Release Limiting Beliefs: The witch wound often comes with a lot of limiting beliefs about what’s possible for you. These beliefs might tell you that it’s not safe to be powerful, that you’re not good enough, or that you have to hide your true self to be loved. Take time to identify these beliefs and consciously release them. You can do this through affirmations, visualization, or working with a therapist or healer.

Embrace Your Gifts Fully: Finally, the ultimate healing of the witch wound comes from fully embracing your gifts. Allow yourself to explore your spirituality, to express your intuitive abilities, and to share your wisdom with the world. The more you step into your power, the more the witch wound will heal. Remember, your gifts are meant to be shared—they are your contribution to the world, and the world needs them.

The witch wound is a powerful and deeply ingrained trauma that many people carry. But it’s also a wound that can be healed. By acknowledging its presence, understanding its origins, and taking steps to reclaim your power, you can transform this wound into a source of strength and wisdom. Allowing it to become your teacher and not your persecutor.

As you heal, you’re not just freeing yourself—you’re healing the collective trauma of generations who came before.
