How to Date Money: Flirt, Fall in Love, and Build a Wealthy Relationship

Let’s get real—your relationship with money might need some TLC. For most of us, money feels like that elusive lover who never quite commits. It’s either ghosting us entirely or when it does show up; we’re too nervous about holding onto it. Sound familiar? Well, what if I told you it’s time to change all that by dating money? Yep, dating. Like, swipe-right, candlelit-dinner, sparks-flying kind of dating. Because, spoiler alert: if you want a supportive, lasting relationship with money, you must treat it like someone you want in your life.

Think of it this way—money is energy. And just like any relationship, the energy you put into it is precisely what you’ll get back. So, if you’ve been ignoring your bank account or avoiding your bills like an ex you don’t want to run into, it’s time to make some changes. Let’s dive into how to date money, fall in love with it, and create a healthy relationship supporting your financial goals.

Step 1: Redefine Your Relationship Status with Money

First, we need to talk about your current relationship with money. Be honest—what comes up for you when you think about money? Does it feel stressful? Does it make you want to run and hide? Or maybe it feels like something you’re always chasing but never quite catch. The way you think about money matters. Childhood experiences and societal messaging have probably shaped your beliefs about it, and, let’s face it, a few financial disasters along the way. But the good news? You can change your money story.

Imagine for a moment that money is a person. How have you been treating them? Are you ghosting them, obsessing over them, or maybe even using them without giving anything in return? Ouch, right? It’s time to clean that up. Instead of seeing money as a source of stress or shame, start seeing it as a partner you can trust to support you when you nurture the relationship.

Step 2: Woo Your Wallet (AKA Have a Money Date)

Now that you’ve redefined your relationship status, it’s time to make a move. And that means scheduling regular money dates. Yes, dates. Light some candles, pour your favourite drink, and sit down with your bank account like it’s someone you care about. Check in with your finances, review your budget, and get clear on your goals. This isn’t about stressing over spreadsheets; it’s about making time to connect with your money and show it some love.

Think of it like this: would you expect them to stick around if you were dating someone and ignored their texts for months? Nope. Money works the same way. When you give it attention, it shows up more consistently in your life. Your money dates don’t have to be complicated—carve out time to review where you’re at, where you want to go, and what steps you need to take to get there.

Step 3: Shift Your Mindset from ‘Need’ to ‘Love’

Here’s a game-changer: stop needing money and start loving it. We’ve all heard the phrase, “Money can’t buy happiness,” but let’s be honest—financial security can bring peace of mind. The key is to stop seeing money as something you’re desperate for and start seeing it as a tool that supports your dreams.

Everything changes when you approach money from a place of love, respect, and gratitude.

Instead of feeling anxious when you open your bank app, you feel empowered. You begin to appreciate what money allows you to do—buying groceries, taking a trip, or investing in your future self. Gratitude is like flirting with money, making it want to stick around.

Step 4: Fall in Love by Aligning Money with Your Values

Falling in love with money doesn’t mean hoarding it or spending recklessly. It means making sure your money aligns with what matters most to you. If you value experiences over things, spend accordingly if you’re passionate about giving back, budget for donations. When your spending aligns with your values, money becomes a reflection of who you are rather than a source of guilt or shame.

Think about it: if you were dating someone who constantly ignored your needs or forced you into situations you didn’t enjoy, you’d call it quits, right? The same goes for money. Ensure your financial habits reflect your values and goals, and you’ll be much happier in the relationship.

Step 5: Keep the Spark Alive by Celebrating Wins

No healthy relationship lasts without a little celebration along the way. When you hit a financial milestone—whether it’s paying off a credit card, saving for a big purchase, or sticking to your budget—celebrate it! Acknowledge your progress, even if it feels small. These moments of celebration keep the spark alive and make you want to keep showing up.

And here’s a little secret: the more you celebrate money, the more it wants to show up for you. It’s like sending positive vibes into the universe, saying, “Hey, I love having you around!” And money? Well, it loves being loved.

Your relationship with money is one of the most important relationships you’ll ever have. Whether you like it or not, it’s with you every day, so you might as well make it a love story worth telling. Treat your finances like a partner who supports your dreams, cheers you on, and sticks with you through thick and thin. Schedule your money dates, celebrate your wins, and keep your mindset in check.

Because when you start dating money with the same energy you’d put into dating a person, you’ll find that it sticks around, supports you, and—maybe—makes all your dreams come true. So light that candle, pour that drink, and fall in love with your finances. After all, everyone deserves a happily-ever-after with their bank account.

And remember: money isn’t the bad guy. It’s just waiting for you to swipe right.
