This year has been a whirlwind for many—emotionally, spiritually, and energetically. It’s been a call to dive deep, face our inner shadows, meet ourselves at deeper levels, shed what no longer serves us, and examine our lives with unflinching and unavoidable honesty. This is simply part of the spiritual journey, the evolution of a soul, and the lived experience of that is rarely neat. It’s ongoing, filled with more questions than we often have answers for, layered for deeper and deeper healing, and self-revelations that often ignite the need for a new identity. An upgrade of self, if you will.
I am sure many of us can relate to that being true for the last few years.
For some, this has meant letting go of relationships, beliefs, or old dreams. For others, it was about facing long-buried, and often, painful truths and releasing them with grace. Whether that be parts of our personality or old patterns we’ve rigidly held onto.
To move forward, the best gift we can give ourselves is taking the time out for self-inquiry and reflection This offers a way to process our changes, uncover deeper layers of shadow, and acknowledge our journeys without judgment.
Invitation: Take a few moments each day to write down a realisation you’ve had about yourself recently. Reflect on what this insight has taught you and how it has, or is, helping you navigate your path forward.
Letting Go of ‘Should Haves’ and ‘Could Haves’
In times of deep change, it’s easy to look back and criticise ourselves: “I should have known better,” “I could have done this differently,” or “Why is this happening to me.”
Being hard on yourself only adds weight to an already intense journey. To look back without judgment is to accept each version of ourselves along the way. They all led you to who you are today, after all.
Every experience—whether filled with joy, pain, or confusion—has contributed to who you are right now, and each step and version that got you here, deserves acknowledgment and love. So, instead of dwelling on what might have been done differently, honour the lessons learned, wisdom gained, and the strength you’ve developed in the process.
Invitation: Practice a “gentle observation” exercise by sitting quietly and replaying a past event that you’re tempted to judge. Watch it as if it were a scene in a movie—without personal criticism. Ask, “What wisdom have I gained from this experience?” “What has this taught me about myself, or/and my life?” This allows you to unpack your growth in a way that you’ve maybe not given yourself space to do before now.
Recognising the Necessity of Release
Reflection also means recognising the things we have to release, and what I mean by that, is letting go of the things that don’t belong in your life anymore, even if it is painful to do so. Whether it be a job, a relationship, or an outdated version of us, letting go is an act of courage. This is about sifting through the layers of our lives and assessing what is truly aligned with our heart and soul’s needs for our present, and future self. Each release, even though it probably won’t feel like it at the time, is a win and one more step towards authenticity, healing, and the life we deserve.
Invitation: Make a list of things, people, or situations you’ve released (or should release). Next to each one, write a few words about why it needed to go, and how letting it go has opened new space in your life (yes, even the painful releases). This exercise honours the courage it took to release what was no longer aligned with you and validates your decision to do so.
Embracing the Transformation
Sure, change and transformation can happen in an instant. Most likely though, it will happen slowly over time. Those quiet shifts can go unnoticed until you have that aha “Well, that happened, and I didn’t even realise it” moment. Like becoming aware of a new perspective or belief, a newfound boundary that you’re suddenly firm on, or a gentle acceptance of something we once resisted.
They are the times we choose self-love over self-doubt, to have courage instead of fear, and to speak our truth instead of staying silent. Celebrating these shifts, no matter how loud or subtle keeps us connected to our progress and reminds us that life experience is always happening for us to grow, change and transform. They all contribute to the evolution of our soul.
Invitation: Each evening, jot down one subtle win from your day. It could be a boundary you maintained, a negative thought you rephrased, or a moment of self-compassion. By consistently recognising these small shifts, you’ll become more aware of your ongoing inner growth.
Reflection as a Path to a Fresh Perspective
As we look toward the future, reflection becomes our friend and an irrespective way of grounding us in the wisdom we’ve earned and learned despite, or because of, our shadow. This clarity allows us to move forward with a fresh perspective and understanding of our deeper sense of self. We get to live more intentionally, aligned to our truth, and trusting of the path we are here to walk.
Invitation: Create a vision board or vision video for the year ahead, focusing on what feels aligned with your growth and values now. Use images, words, or quotes that resonate with the person you’ve become and the path you’re ready to take forward.
Each choice, release, and win adds to our story, and by honouring them, we empower ourselves to continue evolving. Looking back with awareness, without the weight of judgment, allows us to see our journey as sacred, full of lessons, strength, and purpose. We stop beating ourselves up about it. Which frees us to see ourselves, and our future in a brighter light. One that we’re empowered to walk with courage, clarity, and an open heart.
