How to Stop Absorbing Other People’s Energy Without Shutting Your Heart

There’s a particular kind of exhaustion that doesn’t come from doing too much. It comes from being around people.

Not because we don’t love them. Not because we’re antisocial. But because something in us stays open, porous, listening too hard. We walk into a room and our body starts reading the emotional temperature before we’ve even taken a seat. We leave a conversation and feel heavy, scattered, or strangely flat, as if we’ve been carrying more than our own experience.

Many of us were taught to call this empathy. And sometimes it is.

But absorbing other people’s energy is not the same as being compassionate. Compassion can be steady and warm. Absorbing is often anxious and over-responsible. It can be a nervous system pattern, a trauma response, a spiritual sensitivity, or a mix of all three.

The good news is we don’t have to choose between being open-hearted and being protected. There’s a middle way.

What it actually means to “absorb energy”

In spiritual language, we might say we’re picking up on someone’s energy field. In everyday language, we might say we’re highly attuned, easily influenced, or deeply affected by mood and tone.

From a nervous system perspective, it can look like this: the body is scanning for cues of safety and belonging, then adjusting itself to fit what it senses. That adjustment costs energy.

For some people, it’s also a genuine sensitivity. They feel things quickly, sometimes before words are spoken. That sensitivity isn’t a flaw. It’s information.

The issue is what we do with the information.

When we unconsciously take responsibility for what we sense, we start carrying what isn’t ours.

Why it happens (and why it’s not your fault)

If we grew up in environments where emotions were unpredictable, where we had to be “good” to stay safe, or where someone else’s mood shaped the whole household, we learned to track people.

That tracking can become automatic.

Even in adulthood, the body can keep doing what it once did to survive:

  • reading faces and tone for danger
  • anticipating needs
  • smoothing tension before it escalates
  • taking on emotional labour to keep things stable

Spiritually, some of us also have naturally open channels. We feel, sense, and intuit. That can be beautiful.

But without boundaries, it can also become a constant leak.

Empathy vs absorption: a simple distinction

Empathy says, “I can feel with you.”

Absorption says, “I have to feel it for you.”

Empathy can be present without losing the self. Absorption often blurs the line between what’s happening in the other person and what’s happening inside us.

If we want to stay loving without shutting down, the goal isn’t to become less sensitive. It’s to become more anchored.

Signs you’re absorbing other people’s energy

This can show up in subtle ways, especially for people who are used to overriding their own signals.

Emotional signs

  • mood shifts that don’t match what’s happening in your life
  • sudden sadness, irritability, or anxiety after being with someone
  • feeling responsible for other people’s comfort
  • a sense of guilt when you don’t “help”

Physical signs

  • tight chest or throat after conversations
  • headaches, nausea, heaviness, or fatigue after social time
  • feeling wired, then crashing
  • difficulty sleeping after emotionally charged interactions

Relational signs

  • over-explaining yourself
  • rescuing, fixing, or coaching when you didn’t mean to
  • struggling to say no without a story
  • feeling drained even with people you care about

None of these mean we’re doing life wrong. They’re simply patterns worth noticing.

How to stop absorbing energy without becoming cold

The aim here is not to build walls. It’s to build a boundary that’s alive.

A living boundary lets love through, but it doesn’t let everything in.

Anchor in the body before you enter the room

If we’re already floating, we’ll absorb more.

Before a meeting, a phone call, a family lunch, even a trip to the shops, try a small grounding cue:

  • feel both feet on the floor
  • soften the jaw
  • breathe down into the belly
  • notice three things you can see

This is not a performance. It’s a reminder to the nervous system: “I’m here. I’m in my body.”

Name what’s yours (quietly, internally)

When we sense something intense, it can help to silently ask:

  • “Is this mine?”
  • “Did I feel this before I walked in?”
  • “What changes if I let this belong to them?”

This isn’t about judging the other person. It’s about returning ownership.

A simple inner phrase can be surprisingly powerful: “That’s not mine to carry.”

Practise compassionate distance

Compassion doesn’t require merging.

We can care deeply and still hold a little space between our system and theirs. Sometimes that space is created through something as ordinary as posture.

Try sitting back in the chair, letting the shoulders drop, and imagining the breath creating a gentle boundary around the body.

Not a shield made of fear. A boundary made of self-respect.

Stop “fixing” as a reflex

For many sensitive people, fixing is how we manage discomfort.

If someone is upset, we offer solutions. If someone is confused, we over-explain. If someone is tense, we try to lighten the mood.

But fixing often comes from the belief that their discomfort is unsafe for us.

A different practice is to stay present without taking over:

  • “That sounds really hard.”
  • “I’m here with you.”
  • “Do you want support or do you want to be heard?”

This keeps the heart open without making their emotions our job.

Use energetic hygiene that feels normal, not dramatic

Some people love visualisations. Others find them too much. Either way, the principle is the same: we clear what we picked up.

A few gentle options:

  • wash your hands slowly after an interaction, imagining release
  • step outside for two minutes and breathe fresh air
  • shake out the arms and hands like you’re flicking water off
  • have a shower and let it be a reset

These are simple, but the body understands ritual.

Choose boundaries that match your capacity

Sometimes the most spiritual thing we can do is admit we don’t have the bandwidth.

Boundaries don’t have to be harsh. They can be clean:

  • “I can’t talk about this tonight, but I can check in tomorrow.”
  • “I’ve got ten minutes.”
  • “I’m not the right person for this.”

When we honour capacity, we stop leaking.

What to do when the energy is already in your system

Even with the best boundaries, we’ll still have moments where we leave an interaction feeling off.

When that happens, it helps to focus on settling the body first, then making meaning.

Step 1: regulate

  • eat something nourishing if you haven’t
  • hydrate
  • breathe slowly, especially longer exhales
  • move gently (a walk, stretching, a few minutes of tidying)

Step 2: release

Ask: “What am I holding that isn’t mine?”

Then do something that signals completion: journalling for five minutes, voice-noting your thoughts, or even saying out loud, “I release what isn’t mine.”

Step 3: learn

Later, when you feel steadier, reflect:

  • “What was the moment I started taking responsibility?”
  • “What boundary would have helped?”
  • “What did I need that I didn’t give myself?”

This turns sensitivity into wisdom.

A gentle truth about sensitivity

If we’re sensitive, we’re going to feel things. That’s not the problem.

The problem is when we believe we have to hold what we feel.

We’re allowed to be loving and protected.

We’re allowed to be open and discerning.

And we’re allowed to stay connected to ourselves, even when someone else is in a storm.
