Why Self-Growth Starts with Self-Honesty

Nearly all of us present an inauthentic version of ourselves to the world. Being inauthentic can be as simple as finding it difficult to own up to your mistakes or a much more challenging inability to face past traumas and abuse. These perplexities make you misrepresent yourself to others. At best, they encourage a false impression in others; at worst, you start to believe your lies, getting lost in them and making it impossible to embrace your truth.

Self-growth is an intrinsic process of taking the required steps towards becoming the person you are meant to be. Self-growth helps you to align with your core values, making you feel more confident and happy in who you are. Self-growth, the process of deeply knowing yourself to increase your well-being, can only happen when you are willing to explore what it is to be you. Therefore, the first step towards developing a better understanding of yourself is a willingness to self-reflect and take an honest look at who you are and how you need to learn, change, and grow.

Self-honesty can be one of the most complex aspects of self-growth because it asks you to look at the deepest parts of yourself, where you store your perceived flaws and hidden pain and accept them. Without even realising it, often we judge ourselves harshly, finding it easier to blame rather than take responsibility for ourselves. When you use tactics to avoid facing the painful aspects of yourself, you cannot be who you truly are. When you self-reflect and ask questions to understand why you are the way you are, you create an opportunity to find acceptance in your strengths and weaknesses. When you accept yourself, you can live in alignment with your authentic self, leading to increased health and happiness.

In accepting who you are, you are committing yourself to improving the parts that need improving and taking a closer look at the aspects of yourself that need healing.

This is an exercise in acceptance, not criticism or judgement towards oneself. Being honest with yourself is at the foundation of this process because you are choosing to take the time to self-reflect and take responsibility for yourself. Instead of using distractions such as blaming other people, your circumstances, or your past for why you are the way you are.

Choosing to embrace self-honesty is an empowering experience because you move away from seeing yourself as a victim, and you start to realise that you are the author of your own life. As you come to terms with your shadow self without living in fear, you can let go of being defensive and hiding your true nature from yourself and others. Instead, you feel able to take the necessary steps to enhance all aspects of your mind, body, and spirit.

Self-honesty takes courage and an intense willingness to confront the most painful and complex aspects of what makes you who you are and acknowledge the darkness. Many of us are too afraid to be this honest with ourselves, choosing instead to make excuses for why we won’t acknowledge our pain. As hard as it is to be honest about who you are and confront your weaknesses, in the long run, it will help you and others to love you for who you are: traumas, scars, insecurities, failings and all. Only when you shine a light on the dark can you embrace all that you are and grow into an honest and authentic person.
