For once, all of my spiritual teachers and my fellow spiritual practitioners are in passionate agreement. We all believe that our planet and many of her inhabitants are experiencing profound spiritual awakenings, despite lots of outward evidence to the contrary.
I would define a spiritual awakening as a radical shift in reality and perception that moves us out of a very limited ego awareness of our self, and a belief in our separation from others and the higher realms. Either suddenly or gradually, we acquire an understanding of the interconnectivity of all beings and a loving connection to our planetary home. It is a miraculous moment or process where, quite simply put, our belief system is blown apart so that we can suddenly see and believe that which was impossible before.
Many people I know well are waking up to their limited, fear-based beliefs and choosing to make different, conscious choices. They are moving from an unconscious existence to a radical conscious awareness. This is a magnificent experience to witness. And once this occurs, these souls are becoming radicalised, but in a newly loving and heart-centred way. These new “radicals” are conscious, awake beings who advocate for loving, inclusive, and complete political or social change.
I recently came across a podcast featuring the spiritual giants Deepak Chopra and Marianne Williamson. Deepak was discussing the critical importance of every human moving from “angry activism” to “sacred activism”. And this really got me thinking about how I can engage with the world with passion and love, not anger and frustration.
If you check out the image, it is an overview of the energetic vibrations associated with different emotions. For instance, anger is a “contracted” emotion that has a low vibration of 150 hertz (Hz). Fear has a scarily low vibration of 100 Hz. Love, on the other hand, is an expanded emotion that has a vibration of 500 Hz. Joy is even higher at 540 Hz.
Deepak was saying that because different emotions vibrate at different frequencies, the qualities and form they have, as well as the levels of consciousness present within them, will be different. So the emotions that we bring to our desire to effect positive change in the world can radically affect the outcomes that we experience.
Therefore, we’ll want to engage in changing the world from the highest vibrational vantage point. Because The Law of Attraction states that what you put out, you get back.
When I see all of the crazy and brutality that is going on in the world right now, my initial responses are fear, anger and frustration. I want to scream, blame and recriminate. Without consciously intending to, I start to hate on those who are hating on others or the planet herself. In effect, I am engaging with the crazy at its own vibrational level, not mine. I am lowering my loving concern from 500 Hz (love) to 150 Hz (anger). By doing this, I guarantee that I can’t realise a loving outcome to the situation that is causing me concern. Because I can’t get a 500 Hz solution when I am bringing a 150 Hz tool. Think about that for a moment.
According to Deepak, the work for us spiritual seekers is to engage with the world in a spirit of joyful detachment. By doing this, we ensure that we don’t entangle our karma with those who are engaging in all of the insanity. In other words, by staying in the higher vibrations of expanded emotions, we remain free from enslavement in the lower vibrations of those who are causing the problems that we are lovingly trying to solve!
In the same podcast, Marianne also spoke about having “a passionate commitment to doing what we can.” That really resonates with me, because it implies a healthy awareness of our humility. Humility is an honest understanding of who and what we are, followed by an earnest desire to be all that we can be. For example, we realise that we can’t fix everything by ourselves. So we try to do our part, without ego attachment to specific outcomes, and join others who have a similar loving vibration. We collaborate in order to affect higher vibrational outcomes to conflict and suffering.
Unfortunately, my previous attempts to help others and the planet have been hampered by my biggest character defect; pride. As you can see from the image, pride is a contracted emotion with an energetic vibration of only 175 Hz. You can tell that pride is present when you use the two words “I know…” You see, my small, selfish, fear-based ego likes to be right. Actually, it needs to be right. I call my ego-self Phyllis. She is about 75 years old and lives in an old caravan in the desert. Phyllis smokes unfiltered cigarettes and her hair is always in curlers. Phyllis is perpetually disappointed in people and situations. She has an exasperated sigh and frequently employs a dramatic eye-roll.
When I am confronted with inhumanity or a flagrant disregard for the planet, Phyllis tells me that the “bad” people are stupid and wrong. She knows (a) that they should be punished, and (b) what that punishment should be. I am in fear, pride and anger even before I take any action.
When I was first introduced to Phyllis almost thirty years ago, a spiritual teacher asked me: “Scott, do you want to be right, or do you want to be happy?” And I thought, “What a RIDICULOUS question. Of course, I want to be right!” I routinely need to check in with myself in order to assess my motivations, send Phyllis back into her caravan, and then choose a higher, expanded emotion. I don’t want to be right as often now. When I am centred in myself and connected to you, I am trying to be of service.
Let’s always be clear about the emotions that we are bringing to any situation, with an awareness of the vibration that those emotions carry.
When we find ourselves in the lower emotions, let’s pause, breathe and not take any action. After reflection, we can choose a higher point of engagement. That way we will send out a higher vibrational charge, and can be more confident
about seeing a better outcome.
