Are you constantly being told to take some time for yourself and to look after yourself first, yet you don’t know where to start? I can imagine that you live a busy life, fitting in as much as you can into your schedule, to ensure that all of the things get done (things that you need and those around you need), and while running to a schedule can be beneficial at maximising your time, it may leave you with little to no room to block out time for you. When you do find that window of opportunity to finally make a date with yourself, is what you are choosing to do, recharging your energy? Are you waking up each day refreshed and energised, or are you feeling foggy and overwhelmed by the day’s list of tasks?
The time to carve out dedicated time and space for yourself is now. And the good news is that creating time and space for yourself is a very personalised thing. Consistency is key. Meaning, that if you can block out just 5 minutes in your day, and entertain an activity that fills you with energy, and you can consistently keep that up, you will notice a big shift in your mindset and energy levels, to continue moving forward. Perhaps your days aren’t that jam-packed and you can wrangle a longer period, that’s fantastic.
The key focuses here are:
- Discovering what it is that energises you
- Making time and space regularly
- Start now
Let’s work backwards here, there is no better time than the present to get started on this. Rather than waiting for X to happen so that you can move forward, or feel ready that you have crafted the perfect morning routine and it is going to change everything and allow you more time, start right now. Things will start falling into place sooner, once you get moving.
The fun part is playing with new activities, and being mindful of how you feel before, during and afterwards. Below are some suggestions:
- Spending time in nature, whether that be in your garden, at the beach, in a park, or generally in outdoor natural spaces. This is a fantastic way to breathe deeper, enjoy the crisp fresh air, ground yourself by connecting to Mother Earth and feel connected in mind and body.
- Get creative. Whether it is through art, cooking, writing, sewing, building etc, the highlight is to see something grow and evolve using your physical energy and hands.
- Move your body. Take a dance class, or move intuitively to the music of your choice. If you prefer a slower more mindful pace, then practice yoga, stretching, tai chi, or take a walk/go to the gym. Moving our body helps connect us back to our mind and body alignment.
- Community and connection. Find your way to connect with others, in small and gentle ways, this guides us back to our natural way of being.
- Detoxing from technology. Silence the constant notifications and continued access that others have to you, by putting away your devices at scheduled times/days. Allow yourself the opportunity to not be distracted.
- Journaling and creating a channel for the inner workings of your mind to be released, which creates space and peace within.
You may find a variety of things that recharge you, and a practice of 5 mindful minutes a few times per week, will be a difference maker. As when we put energy into intention, and create actions, we are allowing a powerful shift to happen, within ourselves.
There is no need to wait until the next time that you are feeling flat or like you are burning out to get started on recharging and filling your cup. There has never been a better time than now. Have fun, be creative and enjoy the process of finding the things that make you feel good.
